Negative Scanning Problem Using Epson Scan Software

Hi,
When I scan a black and white negative film using Epson Scan, Home Mode, the preview looks great.  The configuration is "Colour Control" Continuos Auto Exposure with Display Gamma set to 1.8 (default I think)
I then scan the negatives and the saved image is far darker than the preview.  I need the final output to match the preview- how do I do this?

Make sure the rectangular slots at either end of the film frame are not obstructed or covered in any way. When I attempted to scan color negatives I had the same darkness problem in the scanned image. When I cleared those rectangular slots, everything was fine. I hope this helps.
