Printer unable to communicate with computer

When I try to print a document I get a notice of "printer unable to communicate with computer."

To rectify this problem I've tried:

I've done the restart of the computer. Nothing

I've disconnected the USB cable to both the printer and computer and
reconnected it. Nothing.

I've disconnected the power cable to both the printer and computer and
reconnected it. Nothing.

I've checked to make sure the printer is tied to the proper port. USB. Nothing.

The USB cable isn't damaged. And the power cable is fine.

Still after checking all of those things, I still get Printer unable to communicate with computer.

Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

What printer is installed on your computer?

I can "send" documents to the printer, and the printer is on and working, but status is "offline" and I can't change it to accept communication from the computer - this is on Windows 7

The printer shows up when I go to "print" - it is listed as default, and on the list of installed printers as default printer. When I send doc to printer, it states this has been sent to the printer. But a check of printer properties states printer is "offline" and although it's on and plugged in and wires all work, the document never gets printed. Showed up briefly on "documents pending" then disappeared again.

Try downloading a more recent drivers. If there's no updated driver you can uninstall and reinstall it. (driver files may be corrupted).

Even though your USB cable looks fine try to swap it with another USB cable.

I swapped it with another cable, no difference ... I uninstalled and reinstalled and it seems to have gotten me further from where I need to be.

Most easiest fix for this.. make sure in the properties of that printer.. under the PORT tab. make sure its set to usb not LPT. this is very common error.
