I have a NAD3240PE, which I have had for many years from new and don;t want to throw it away because its such a good amp. It just stopped working after 27 years(?, when I power the unit up, there is thud on the speaker output, but nothing else, the power light does not come on. I would like to take it to a service shop, but the one that I have used for years ahs closed down, I live in the UK

Hi Obviously the unit is playing the disk because your audio is fine, and getting some kind of black & white picture out of the composite, means that the video processor is probably ok. The most likely things to check then is the yellow video cable, (just swap the red or white in place of the yellow on both the DVD and your tv to test), or possibly the yellow RCA jack on the back of your DVD has gotten loose. If you have not done so, try wiggling it gently to see if your video comes back. If it does, and you are handy with a soldering iron, you can probably repair it yourself. Other than that, it would be a problem for a repair shop. (and a strange one!) Hope this helps, and good luck!

are you absolutely certain your subs are in good shape? have you put a meter on them and measured the ohms as you depress the cone [causing the cone to move up and down on the pole of the magnet? do the ohms stay constant? go up to infinity[ suggesting an open] or go to zero or close to zero [ suggestting a short] both of these conditions will result in a zero or a very limited output from your amplifier, while still showing a green status light, if or when a full short or open occurs on the subs, a fault led will become lit, and whet that means is that u have fried the outputs....do a bit more testing with your vom....and good luck or try another speaker for testing purposes...

I have experienced a similar problem with my Sony STR-GX57ES and took it to a certified tech only to find it needed the power supply replaced. I opted to hunt down a compatible power supply but have been unsucessful thus far. That being said I picked up an STR-D665 for next to nothing and found the power supplies to be quite different (you would hope so any, with the ES meaning Elivated Standard and all) but with the D665 working flawlessly I'd rather have something working than nothing.
