Internet device problem (maybe)

no this is not normal if you keep dropping off then theres a problem with either the modem or the reception you are getting, if your using a wireless modem try to look for a good spot where you can reviece a good connection if you are not using a wireless modem, if you have a spare modem try using it if still get the same result then its time contact your i.s.p (internet service provider)

Modem keeps disconnecting and needs rebooting every time I use it

Yes, this can be a problem with the modem that you have first thing that you need to do here is to reset the modem and reconfigure it back, but if after that still have the same problem better contact your ISP and ask them if everything is working from their end...

Unable to connect to internet through netgear modem. told to uninstall firewall, this I did but still no joy.

really need more information to make an educated guess, but if this netgear is recently added, try using the control panel - add/remove and remove all programs for the netgear. Then control panel - system - device manager and uninstall the modem. Keep modem connected to pc and reboot. After it detects the modem use the modem cd to load only the driver. Let windows manage the modem.

My wireless connection keeps going on and off

you have to connect your computer first directly to the modem to test if you'll get the same problem hook to it. if same problem occurs you have to call your isp or whoever gave you the modem to have it reset or reflashed.
