I realize this printer is pretty long in the tooth, but she's a real workhorse! I just got dsl and a wireless router (Westell 7500 Gateway) and would like to add my MFC-8820D to the network--is this possible?
SETTING UP A SHARED NETWORK PRINTER
Any printer that isconnected to a computer and is connected on a LAN can be configured so allother computers on the same network can print to this printer. This means thecomputer with the printer attached to it MUST be booted up at all times whenother computers want to access the printer.You need to install theprinter driver on the computer and configure it as a Shared printer.The other computers on thenetwork need to add this printer to their computer.Follow these steps toset-up a shared network printer :-1. all you people are complaining that the printer goese off line wrong all brother printers go into sleep mode when not used for a extended period of time, usualll by pushing any key it will go on line

I'm pretty sure that the problem (though the machine indicating otherwise) is that gmail requires SSL, and the Scan to Email (server) doesn't support SSL. If this is the problem, you can easily check it out by trying to use some other mail, with another SMTP server, which doesn't require SSL.

this printer uses a 3rd party program to print over the network. try reinstalling the CD software. This will fix it. The problem is that the printer gets lost on the newtork if the router reassisgns it a new IP, other than 192.168.1.66 that it expects. Routers may do this upon resetting. You can reserve the ip address in the router settings, and make it static in the printer, but that is more work. If you can USB print to the printer, this is all that is wrong.

This instruction is to setup Brother Laser printer 2170W in windows 7
Turn off Windows Firewall
To reset the printer:
Turn off the printer.
Press and hold the Go Button in front, at the same time turn on the printer from the right side. You will see three lights(Error, Drum, Toner) turn on. Release the Go button. The light is not blue and is off.
Now, Press the Go button 7 times. Wait for some seconds.
The three lights will turn on and off by themselves. The printer warms up and then stops.
Connect the ethernet cable to the wireless router and the printer
in the browser type:
http://192.168.1.1
It shows the device connected and its ip address.
Close the browser and open new browser
on your internet browser type in http://(ip address that you see as device)
click on "Network configuration"
user: admin
Password: access
click on "configure interface". Change it to "Auto Switching" Click OK
You are back in "Network configuration"
click on Configure wireless
Make sure it is "Infrastructure" and the "channel" is correct.
Also "Authentization Method" should be "open system"
Choose your encryption method
type in your password in "hexadecimal format" and click "submit".
If your password is ascii change it to hexadecimal with an online converter
Follow the instructions.
Wait until it prints the papers.
When it tells you to remove the ethernet cable, Do not remove.
Wait until printing is done. Turn off the printer and remove the cable. Turn on printer.
Now Print the printer status:
click on the Go button once to wake up the printer.
Now click on the Go button 3 times. Wait! it will print 4 pages.
Look at the last page
you will see the IP address of the printer.
go to your browser and type in http://( new ip address that you see on last page)
The last step is again in the "configure wireless" to "configure TCP/IP"
choose something like 192.168.1.198 the last 3 digits should be a high number. Close browser.
Now put in the CD and install the wireless Driver only. All Done!

have you found a solution? I just purchased brother wireless printer, same thing, called and they said it must be my router. I haven't had a chance to play with it as much as you have, but before I do was wondering if you found a way to make it work yet?
