Thats ok so I believe the HDD and the memory diags have passed and no error codes. Make sure the windows XP CD is there in the drive and turn off your system. Now try this remove battery and ac adapter.Press power button for 10 seconds. then connect only the ac adapter. Here is the link for instructions on how to boot from the CD.

So thats very good. So you have begun the windows installation. Do you have important data then do no delete any partition otherwise delete all partitions create a new partition and then install the XP on it.

Repair option only when you wanna save the data already there. most of the time does not work but can give it a try. If you are not worried about data loss just continue installing XP.
Delete the old partitions as well
use ntfs quick as the option in the next screen
ok then you might have to start from the beginning

Yes your system should be faster now. Let me know the memory available on the system you can get the information by typing msinfo32 on start run window and click on ok and you can probably upgrade its not that costly.

Seems like you have the maximum that can be upgraded to.
i would suggest that do not uninstall applications that you do not use often in the laptop. Then it should just work fine.
Hi which is the wireless card that you have? I can get the drivers for you.
I believe you use the CD that did not came with the laptop. Dell Cds are preactivated so they do not ask for the product key. You can also find the product key on the bottom of your laptop if the system came with XP also you can ask dell to ship the media across to you. They will send you the media even if the warranty has expired and media or cds that they send do need a product key as they are all pre activated. If you need help in wireless I can definitely help. Post your gtalk or yahoo meseenger ids. I can take probably a remote connection and get it done for you.

during testing of express test recieved error code 0F00.136C: Msg IDE device failed: Blank media or no media is present in optical dive. Test requires edia with digital data (Resouorce CD, Installation CD). I click continue testing.

suddenly lose pwr restarted and rec'd windows root>system32\haldll want re-install a copy of the above file.
ok back at setup following yr previous command using ntfs quick option.
Just want to say thanks to you for all your support in this. I do have a friend who is having a similar problem in doing a fresh install who lives in Oakland,Ca. One other question before I leave this will alleve programs running in background and maybe bring back to manufactures spec thereby a little faster?

how do i get the necessary drivers to complete reinstall. can't find drivers to rund my wireless adapter and other appl. seem to be worst now than when i started.
Thanks but the real problem is I can't install Windows XP because it states product key is invalid. Went to systems and copied the key that was there and there is not 25 number/letters there. So now I have an empty laptop.

Thank you for the invitation.
We will first run a small diags and check that the system is ok. If the system diags passes then I think we will begin with re installation. Also let me inform you that re installation takes a little bit of time so be patient through the steps as well.
First ran a small diagnostics by pressing FN+ Power button and then turn on the laptop.
It will take you through a series of diagnostics. Follow the prompts.
If this passes let me know. This will make sure that the hard drive, memory, and the system is good and we can begin with OS re installation. Do not worry I will take you through these step by step.
Also please make a note in some of the older dell laptops the Fn+power button does not work. let me know if that is the case.
please posts the results of your diagnostics.
