If the system boots and runs, even if only for 10 minutes, then almost certainly the motherboard supports whatever type of RAM you have plugged into it. As someone said, it may be sub-optimal but it is usable. Even so, I would check (as others have said) that you have used the correct type of RAM for your PC.
My guess is that the extra current being drawn from the internal power supply board is causing components to overheat. If it's like most laptops & more than, say, one year old, then the cooling fans will have sucked a load of dust into the guts of the machine, blocking the passage of cooling air. You will need to get a techie (unless you're confident enough & have the tools to do it yourself) to open the case, remove the CPU fan & heatsink & clean it out & check for blockages anywhere else, especially around the power conditioning circuitry.
Once last thought: all laptops have a small board, or area of the motherboard, which takes the current provided by the external power brick and turns it into the various voltages needed by the rest of the PC. It may be that, although the motherboard can handle that much RAM, the power supply can't and it is overheating for that reason - leading to random lockups.
Use synchronous settings for optimal performance. Use either 1GB or 512GB both of same ratings (for ex. PC2100 or PC2700) in both the slots. Usually you get a sluggish performance if RAMs of different capacity are installed

Not all ram is compatiable with your motherboard. Just because you have 2 slots does not mean that you can put 1.5 gigs of ram in there. Your board might only support 2 sticks of 512, or 2 sticks of 256. Google the make and model of the motherboard you have, and it should tell you how much and what kind of ram it supports.
