When I try to open Call of duty it apperas the error 998 and the message buffer overrun detected

Any time I've seen this error appear when playing a game it is caused by a bad graphics driver. I would suggest going to the website of the retailer that your graphics devices comes from and updating to the most recent driver and giving it a shot.

Many different things can cause buffer overruns. This is a common attack that hackers use to exploit bad C code. In this case, since it's a video game...I'm going to say graphics driver.

You can actually see an example of the same behavior here:

Word 2000

A buffer overrun error is a somewhat generic error in the sense that buffer overruns can occur in the OS, OS subsystems or any application that you may be running. So what you have posted here does not necessarily tell me where the issue lies. Here's a progressive approach to solving the issue.

Buffer overruns are runtime errors in the program code. They occur when a program attempts to write more information to a particular "array" than is allowed or expected. MS Windows has a number of security patches specifically designed to fix these loopholes in their OS. So to start with, I strongly suggest visiting the Windows Update site and patching your Windows operating system until the website tells you that there a no updates available. Sometimes you will have to go through the process a few times before all the updates are successfully applied.

Next visit the Microsoft Office update site (office.microsoft.com/officeupdate). There is also a link to it on the Windows Update page. Update your Office application in the same manner. Once that's done if you are still experiencing the problem, you'll want to launch the installer for MS Office from your disk and attempt a repair.

If that fails, perform an uninstall of MS Office, then manually delete the Winword.exe file from your PC and reinstall the software from scratch.

This progressive approach should fix whatever the issue is.

Good luck!
