How to enter two sets of parentheses - Texas Instruments TI-30XA Calculator

Quick-Start Guide When you enter an expression into the calculator, the calculator will simplify the expression by expanding multiplication and combining like terms. At this point the calculator will attempt to factor the expression by dividing a G C F, and identifying a difference between two squares, or factorable trinomials. Use the following rules to enter expressions into the calculator. Variables Any lowercase letter may be used as a variable. Exponents Exponents are supported on variables using the ^ (caret) symbol. For example, to express x 2, enter x ^ 2. Note: exponents must be positive integers, no negatives, decimals, or variables. Exponents may not currently be placed on numbers, brackets, or parentheses. Parentheses and Brackets Parentheses ( ) and brackets [ ] may be used to group terms as in a standard expression. Multiplication, Addition, and Subtraction For addition and subtraction, use the standard + and - symbols respectively. For multiplication, use the * symbol. A * symbol is optional when multiplying a number by a variable. For instance: 2 * x can also be entered as 2x. Similarly, 2 * ( x + 5 ) can also be entered as 2 ( x + 5 ) ; 2 x * ( 5 ) can be entered as 2 x ( 5 ). The * is also optional when multiplying parentheses, example: ( x + 1 ) ( x - 1 ). Order of Operations The calculator follows the standard order of operations taught by most algebra books - Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction. The only exception is that division is not currently supported; attempts to use the / symbol will result in an error. Division, Square Root, Radi cals, Fractions Division, square root, radi cals, and fractions are not supported at this time. A future release will add this functionality.

Probably the simplest is to convert both numbers to improper fractions then divide.
Some calculators can work with fractions. With one of those, simply enter the first mixed number, then divide by the other.

Most likely you're having troubles with the negative sign, not the parenthesis.

Press 2 - ( 2 +/ ) =
The "+/-" key is the key just to the left of the "=" key, used to enter negative numbers.

For this problem you don't need parenthesis. You can simply press
2 - 2 +/- =

The FOIL Method is a process used in algebra to multiply two binomials. The lesson on the Distributive Property, explained how to multiply a monomial or a single term such as 7 by a binomial such as (4 + 9x).
But, what if there was a binomial instead of a single term outside of the parentheses? That is, what if a binomial was being multiplied by another binomial? An example of this is given below.

FOIL stands for:

If your measurement are negative use parentheses such as, (-4) degrees Fahrenheit converted to Celsius should = -20. Where as 4 degrees Fahrenheit equals -15.5 degrees Celsius. the parentheses are not needed if your measurement is positive.

Enclose any negative number between parentheses before squaring.
If you enter -4^2, where - is the negation, the result will be -16 because of the priority rules: exponentiation (power) has priority over negation.
If you enter (-4)^2 the result will be 16, because parentheses have priority over the squaring: the 4 is negated then the result is squared.

If the default angle unit is not degree, you must set it to degree by pressing the [DRG] key. Once this is done you type
170 [SIN] [ * ]20 [ENTER]

If it feels awkward to enter the command this way you must insert parentheses to make sure calculator is evaluating the sine of 170 , not the sine of 20*170
20 [*] [( ] 170 [SIN] [)] [ENTER]
Notice that the parentheses enclose 170 [SIN]. The sine of 170 will be computed first, then the result is multiplied by 20.

You should know that you cannot enter something like sin^2(x) as you would by hand. So you must use parentheses: ( sin(x) )^2. If you do that there is no ambiguity. The calculator evaluates the sine because parentheses are evaluated first, then it takes the square.

So 4[x][(] [SIN][(] 60 [)] [)] [Xto the 2] [=] result is 3/

Since you do not say what model you use, what I entered may not be appropriate: the parentheses inside the sine function may not be needed. In the new Casio the first parenthesis inside the sine is supplied by calculator, but the closing one must be entered by the user.

You may have guessed right. The presence of the parentheses makes the content of the parentheses evaluated first. So there is a loss of precision.
On the Ti92 I do 7*(-1/7)+1 and find 0.
But with Floating mode set at 12 decimal digits I get
1/7.=.142857142857.
Then .142857142857.*(-7) + 1 gives 2E-14.
Try to calculate pi*(-1/pi) +1 or e*(1/e)+1.
