Each time I restart my computer, I have to reinstall windows so i can get in. Windows XP has run pretty much flawlessly for a long time until not too long ago. I started her up and I got a message saying "invalid boot disk". It will boot from a cdrom, just NEVER the hard drive. I've tried different hard drives, different configurations (hd only, hd+dvdrom on primary, hd on pri dvd on sec, both on sec...) I installed windows vista and it worked, till i rebooted. Now it says "This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disck. Ensure that the disks controller is enabled in the computer's bios menu." I am half tempted to get another motherboard (or just spend $600 and build another), but hopefully someone has some insight.
Hi, Based on your post/description a very intriguing problem. Offhand a couple of things come to mind: 1. Verify that the partition is Active. If it is NTFS, fdisk will not work so you may have to try Partition Magic or another third party software; 2. It might be the BIOS, maybe a flash is needed either with the same version or even an updated one if it is available. Although hesitant really to include the flashing option, but you can try if all else fails. Of course this is with the idea that worst case scenario, you are already set on buying a new board and the flash is a last ditch/chance effort; 3. MBR of HD corrupt (possibly virus) which can be worked on by not only reinstalling the OS but deleting old partition and re-partitioning, reformat and reinstall. It may be to your advantage to use the HD manufacturer's utilities to perform this task such as DiscWizard for Seagate, Max Blast for Maxtor and others; Am not sure if you have tried, but you can also: 4. Try another HD; 5. Change IDE or SATA cable. Hope this give you additional ideas and/or work out for you. Good luck and pls post again how things turn up. Kind regards.
