Frigidaire compressor model # FRT21LRGW5...replaced overload relay..compressor still buzzes for 15 sec then clicks...gets very hot soon after. Just blows warm air...did not come with icemaker. Places want to charge $200 for new compressor and $50-$60 just to walk in the house...Fridge is past warranty (8yrs old). Any chance of replacing the compressor myself? Do new compressors come with refrigerant already inside? I'm finding compressors with electrical for $150-$180 online all over the place

You'll need a vacuum pump, an oxy-acetylene torch some silphos silver solder. Regular plumbers solder won't work. You might try replacing the start capacitor and maybe use a kicker capacitor on the compressor before you buy a new compressor. You may find it difficult to buy freon if you're not licensed to buy it. To recharge the system, you'll need a set of gauges and hoses and a scale to weigh the freon when you add it to the system. Still want to do it yourself?

SOURCE: Kenmore (253.51399104)side by side making buzzing/humming noise

It will rattle slightly, this is normal. The ones that are burned out will sound like they have gravel in them, you can defininely tell something is wrong.
The problem with diagnosing Kenmore fridges with this problem is that there are different manufacturers. Yours is built by Frigidaire and probably has a Tecumseh compressor. We find more failed compressors with the Tecumsehs than we do with the models that have Embraco compressors. The models with Embraco's generally have more relay failures.

You should not hear the buzz/hum at startup. You will need to replace the compressor, which will be replaced at no charge to you if it is less than 5 yrs old.
If it is older than 5 yrs, you can have it replaced, but it will be almost as expensive as a new fridge. You can buy an aftermarket start device called a 3-in-1. This has a start capacitor built in to give it a little more boost on start up. I don't recommend using them unless it is a short term fix until the compressor can be replaced or if it is out of warranty and there is nothing to lose anyway.
Thanks/Mike

SOURCE: refrigerator Compressor hot to touch & fridge/freezer not cooling

you need to do an amp draw with your meter, clamp the run wire on the compressor, you should get 2-5 amp reading, any higher means the compressor is going bad, also should be a locked rotor amp(LRA) reading on comp.-mike

SOURCE: frigidaire refrigerator model FRT21LRGW5-compressor sound is loud

Sounds like the start relay or start capacitor has failed.

Unplug the unit until you can get a replacement or the compressor will be ruined (if it's not already.).

PTC start relay is P/N 218721108 $36.49
Capacitor is P/N 218909901 $7.99

P/N and pricing from Sears Parts.
