The second problem sounds like the unit is getting too hot and overheating. Best bet to try fixing that is to set the NES up on a shoe box or something that is empty on the inside so that it can absorb some of the heat out of the unit.

I tried this and it still cuts out after four minutes. This time the light was completely out.
