well trying to remove is not a problem if you have some experience of putting it in the hard drive but ,check the wire connections first of all ,but i must inform you if you dont have any idea then ask on some repair shop just the opening part inside the things are really simple it has a LED for power on and off and some simple connectors that connnect ur hard drive to the usb from which you connect it to your computer so check if you can open just the outer shell with some help!!!hope it works for you!!

Windows likes to mess with drive letters. Sometimes if you've plugged in another u.s.b. device, Windows will mis-assign the drive letter. Try this:

  1. Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
  2. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Performance and Maintenance.

Note If you do not see Performance and Maintenance, go to step 3. Performance and Maintenance appears in Control Panel only if you use Category view. If you use Classic view, Performance and Maintenance does not appear.
  3. Click Administrative Tools, double-click Computer Management, and then click Disk Management in the left pane.
  4. Right-click the drive, the partition, the logical drive, or the volume that you want to assign a drive letter to, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
  5. Click Add.
  6. Click Assign the following drive letter if it is not already selected, and then either accept the default drive letter or click the drive letter that you want to use.
  7. Click OK.
I'm pretty sure this will fix the problem. If not try us again at Fixya.com

SOURCE: Vista wants me to format my external harddrive.

Can you access this drive on a non-Vista system? If so, try the Simple Tech WWW site for a diagnostics program?

There are also a number of other software programs that can detect and mark the bad sectors or locations on your drive as bad.

Once those sectors are marked (at the FAT Table) as bad Vista may allow you to access that drive again. IF it does, copy everything available to a DVD. Now reformat the drive but DON'T trust it.

Bottom line is that I personally would not trust that drive again with ANY data that is important to me... I hope you will agree with me. If you decide to use it anyway please backup to two locations or drives!

Good Luck!

SOURCE: 500Gb SimpleTech Ext Drive No Power

Hello.
It sounds like you might have a problem with the power supply.
I have seen MANY external hard drives with failing power supplies. Take it to the store you purchased it from for a check up, it should still be under warrantee if its only 3 months old.
Good Luck!
