The computer (Dell optiplex sx280) boots to the desk top but there is Nothing other than the background picture showing, No icons,Start button etc I have tried to run system restore using the Cnt,alt,del and create new task but no matter what i key in the same message appears '' This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder options contro panel'' please can you help?

Hi,
Maybe the explorer is not loading automatically. As you start Task Manager from Ctrl+Alt+Del, go to new task and run explorer.exe.
OR If it still doesn't solve the problem try and repair the XP installation if you have the XP CD

as I said no matter what command I key in i get the same massage : '' This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder options control panel'' and unfortunately my xp cd is scratched and will not read.
is there any way that i can, from the command prompt create an association to system restore. I think the problem is either a virus or male ware picked up from the internet if it is ,is their anyway i can run a virus scan under the conditions stated above?
