Hi...Bummer about the virus and you having to spend $$ for xp. You can download LAN drivers for free from the HP website. Just make sure onboard lan is enabled in bios.
You can purchase an etehrnet card for your pc also...if you have an open slot. Try newegg.com.
Good luck
If you use the recovery disc provided by the manufacturer, it will re-install OS, drivers also the pre-installed softwares which comes along when youget a new computer. make sure u backup the data first. The recover disc is like a ghost or image copy. This should work. Everything would be loaded in the recovery disc.
The drivers you should have sorted by now as others have posted links. However, one thing you should do in future is install 'Unhackme'. D/L this from the net (Google it) it is very small proggy.
Install this as soon as you are up and running as it kills ALL rootkit virus's on re-boot anything malicious BEFORE your Winodws loads. Anti-Virus S/W is pretty useless now-a-days without this little tool, as most real damagin virus's come in undetected by ALL of the major brands.
'Unhackme' has saved me heaps of times. AVAST is my current favourite Anti-Virus and does a very good job on a small footprint. But the 'rootkit' killer 'unhackme' is the key.
Use 'SNAPSHOT' to make a copy of your 'local disk' drive and back up the entire image to you your external HDD.Your entire system is easily recoverd (outside or within Windows) if anything ever goes wrong.
