I agree that some awnings have a sensor that has them retract. I think one way you can stop it from retracting at random is to block the sensor. That way you can always have it opened. Also this way you are more able to keep it closed when you need to. http://www.rochesterpatioenc.com/services2
Some awnings have a sensor that retracts the awning if wind elevates to certain level. i wish mine did. i have seen them ripped off rv's.
