Cistern leaks into bowl

I assume you have a modern compact cistern that probably has an economy flush facility?

I have very little experience of these. There are two possibilities - firstly the water level could be too high due to a leaking inlet valve and the water leaking into the bowl is from the internal overflow.

A friend has recently had one of these fitted to economise on water but it soon developed a constant leak into the lavatory pan. I checked the water level which was ok and then she called out the guys that fitted it - twice! The first guy took it apart and could find nothing wrong so put it back again and when the leak had stopped went away. The next day the leak was worse and so another guy arrived and did the same but in an effort to justify his existence replaced one small fibre washer and one small O ring even though they appeared to be ok.

The leak stopped and to date has remained stopped. Clearly that type of cistern needs to be assembled very carefully with the sort of precision not typical of plumbers or plumbing.

We have fitted a new ballcock on the watertank (cold) since then we have little cold water

Are you sure the ballcock is correctly adjusted to fill the tank to the required level? The float should have a screw on it which changes the height at which the valve is closed. if set too low you may not get enough head of water to feed the system. If set too high the tank will overflow.

This video deals with a toilet (WC) cistern but the principal is the same for any ballcock valve system.

Cannot remove top of cistern

There are some dual flush cisterns where you have to depress one button to reveal a cavity in the second button. Put a screwdriver in that cavity to lever out the second button, then release the first button and prise that out.

Underneath the buttons is a screw which must be unscrewed to release the cistern lid.

Not sure if this will apply to you... but if not, good luck anyway.

When cistern fills with water it leaks into the bowl

Hi,

This is caused by the 'syphon' mechanism sticking, quite often nowadays the 'brilliant' plastic push button/ syphon combo sticks, and most toilets are fitted with an internal overflow, lift the lid on the cistern and check for anything causing an obstruction.

More often than not, it's a tiny bit of scale that causes such a headache, and the fact that nothing is made with any quality nowadays!

If you can't see what's wrong call a plumber, he/she will solve it.

I hope this helps

Steve
