Are the C's very angular, like ] [ instead of OC (pardon the O, I don't have a backwards C). If you're seeing ] [, they're telling you you need to switch the bobbin winder off. Then the machine can stitch.
and what "switch the bobbin winder off" mean?

My Singer 7258 displayed a backward C and a forward C. I think this indicated that the bobbin threader mechanism was misaligned. I used this video https://youtu.be/-QFd7eC-1LI to re-adjust the bobbin timing. It works again.
Well I feel like an dork for not realizing this. The first answer is correct.
