When I first turn on my EOS 50E the mirror locks up when I try to take first picture. The battery indicator flashes and shows empty but when I press shutter again it releases the mirror and the battery (New) shows full charge.
Turn it off the green rectangle setting and see if it still does this (for example, turn the mode dial to P instead). If it stops doing that, then the flash up shaft in the top cover is bent. If it still does, then either the phase switch on the bottom of the mirror box needs to be cleaned, the shaft the phase switch gear is on is broken (common) or the shutter has a problem.

Detach the lens and try
Or Shoot at infinite focus, If the camera works then the problem is with your reflex mirror
