I have a Garmin etrex Legend. Recently it has developed a problem where the screen goes blank, except for a vertical line. I am unable to move off the screen and cannot turn off the unit. The only 'solution' is to remove the batteries and try again. It happened to me enough times today that I had to abandon my search.
Try updating the unit's software via the Garmin website. There was a satellite launched last year which was causing this problem, and updating the unit's software fixes this. Don't forget to come back and tell us if this fix worked for you.
