When you back up a copy of your files or images, they are copied to your back up medium, they are not removed from the computer . If you have deleted them they can reinstalled from the back up.
The clicking could be a symptom of imminent failure of the hard drive . Back up all information from this drive as soon as possible. It may be something that a program such as checkdisk can fix but be sure to backup drive before attempting any fixes just to be safe. Hope this helps.
