New processor Can I replace a intel Pentium 1.7 Williamette CPU, with a 2.5 Intel pentium Northwood CPU

pc quit, gigabyte mobo,GA8SLML socket 478, 1.8 celeron, tried another processor, 2.6 celeron, starts up & runs, then hangs. difference in fsb speeds?replaced with another 1.8, still acts just like the original 1.8. but will start with the 2.6, then hangs again.any ideas?
