What causes hiccups in infants?

Infant hiccups are most often brought about by child overloading, eating excessively fast or gulping a great deal of air.

Hiccups in infants, especially those as young as three weeks old, are common and usually not a cause for concern. Here are some gentle methods you can try to help alleviate your infant's hiccups:

1. Feed in an upright position: When feeding your baby, hold them in a more upright position. This can help reduce air intake, which can contribute to hiccups.
2. Burp your baby: After feeding, make sure to burp your baby. This helps release any swallowed air that could be causing hiccups.
3. Offer smaller feedings more frequently: If your baby tends to gulp a lot during feedings, try offering smaller amounts more frequently to reduce the likelihood of hiccups.
4. Gently soothe: You can try gently soothing your baby by rocking them or offering a pacifier. Sometimes the distraction can help stop the hiccups.
5. Check feeding technique: Ensure your baby is latched properly during breastfeeding if applicable, or if bottle-feeding, check that the nipple size is appropriate. This can reduce air intake.
6. Wait it out: In most cases, hiccups in infants will resolve on their own without intervention. Sometimes simply waiting a few minutes is all that's needed.

Some leading pediatricians are of the opinion that infant hiccups are usually caused by feeding (formula or other foods) or by a drop in temperature that causes the baby to get cold. Hiccups are considered harmless unless they prove persistent enough to interfere with regular feeding and sleeping. Babies with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) may tend to hiccup more frequently, accompanied by spitting up, coughing and irritability. Such behavior should be mentioned to your medical advisor as should very frequent bouts of uncontrollable hiccups, particularly after age 1. Although baby hiccups are seldom the sign of a more serious underlying medical condition, it never does any harm to be cautious.
