This condition can be caused by plugging in an adapter that has polarity reversed (that's what I did with an after-market power supply). Your battery is probably not bad (I changed to a brand-new battery, and it still had the same problem). However, the problem is deeper: I'm tracking down which component on the power board was burned out when this happened. No luck so far.
You may have fixed only half the problem, the reason your adapter burned could be because the battery was drawing an excessive amount of current that led to it short circuiting. The battery may be defective as well.
