Bought my macbook Christmas of 2006. A couple years later, I was getting close to filling it up and so I noticed that it was starting to operate quite sluggishly. Figuring that I simple needed to upgraded the hard drive, I went ahead and upgraded it to 500GB.
For some time it was okay (not as efficient as it was before...but bearable), but now it's almost painful to work on. I see more of the spinwheel than anything else....any ideas?
Generally, there are a couple of reasons that may cause a Mac computer running slow, but generally two factors: hardware part & system part. For hardware part: I guess it's OK if your Mac is not that old. software errors, even the hDD bad caused
and hdd full.
what tech does is test the system to find the cause. guessing puts data a risk do you what that.
1: is hdd full; look.
2: run smart tests yet HDD.

we do that every year, or more often if data on any PC (unwise) is not kept backed up.
use the CLOUD if backups scare you...
if infected reload the OS (be safe)

Please check your memory from memory management on your mac. Clear some from it and also check virus and malware in your mac by using any advance optimization software like Mac optimizer and protect your mac from virus and malware.

filling it up, well the HDD boot drive
will run slow for 2 reasons, it is full.
or is bad, HDD come in 4 conditions.
new, and fast, older and slower, and smart tests fail, and super slow and crashing the OS and last deal (4 conditions) not counting too full. (a 5th condition) all of this is SOP computer science, nothing new here.
what to do is:
run the smart tests, (as ask at APPLE)
the make sure the HDD is not full by delete your files not need or back them up first.
more move them to the cloud.
Movie files are huge start there and purge them.
the 6th cause is corrupted OS, and so can
a bad HDD.
