Programming a vcr

Rebooting, (Unplugging the power cord for a few minutes, then reconnecting ) will allow you to bring up the menu.
The JVC factory tech said the the menu button is bad and the remote needs to be replaced. This doesn't make sense to me; since the button works after you reboot.
I believe that there is a glitch i0n the programing. Any other ideas as to the cause?

From other posts on this site, just unplug it, wait a minute or so, and plug it back in. I haven't done this yet, but I will go to my parents' place and try it with their vcr.

No, this vcr is not like almost every other vcr in the world. To start recording you have to press the 'Timer' button near the bottom of the remote.

How can t I get the pop up screen when I apply menu. When I press menu nothing appends. I have the illico box for HD and had the videotron tech install it so I can recorded but since the menu does not work I cannot set the time or anything else on it.
