The fact the thermostat doesn't light up means its not getting power which would normally come from a small transformer inside the furnace or air handler. In most cases there is a switch located on the side of the furnace or immediately next to it. Quite often the switch with inadvertently get turned of by a child. Simply turn the switch back on if thats the case and everything should work just fine once again.
