The setup of a range extender depends on the model and your existing router. The current range extenders are listed here: https://www.linksys.com/us/c/wireless-wi-fi-range-extenders/ . The frequently asked questions for each model has a link to the set up information.
In general, plug in the extender near the router. Wait a few minutes. You'll see a blinking light when the extender is looking for a connection.
Some models have a WPS button. Press and hold this button until the lights blink. Press the WPS button on the router before the blinking stops. The devices should pair. (Note: this only works if the SSIDs for the router are being broadcast.) If the WPS fails, try the log in option below.
For others, you need to log into the extender. Go to the network settings for your computer or tablet and search for nearby networks. Connect to the new network with a Linksys Extender Setup name; there will be additional characters indicating the model. Then use a browser to access the extender's web setup via https://www.extender.linksys.com or http://192.168.1.1 . Use either the setup wizard or the manual setup to add the current network SSIDs and passwords for your router.
For some of the Mesh style extenders and the compatible router, it's simpler. Go to the router's web page and log in as the administrator. In the section for the Mesh, tell the router to search for new mesh hardware. Then follow the directions.
I hope this helps.

(Note: after setting up the extender within 6-9 feet from the router, you can unplug it. Then move the extender and test the signal strength to the router. Find a spot where you get good signal to the router and your devices. Do not place the extender next to a device that has poor signal strength to the router and expect good communication back to the router unless you run an wired connection between the extender and the router.)
Unplug the power cables of the router and the range extender for 30 seconds. Plug in the router first. Wait for all the lights to be stable then plug in the range extender. Your range extender should now be in synchronized with your router.
