Focus Good day! When I try to capture footage, the camera screen is completely black.

I went to help my father record an audition tape tonight, everything worked fine except the display screen was always black. Lighting didn't effect it or anything. It was almost like the lens cap was one (it obviously wasn't, though).

Is this the only possibility? Or at leas the most likely solution? I'm afraid that if I call Canon they won't do anything about it because it's several years old (3 as of Christmas) and I don't even know if I sent in the warranty info in the first place...

I feel terrible that I can't help my dad. I also don't like having a broken camera though.
