Press and the text you type will over write what ever you have on the screen. This is typically used in most applications to "type over" existing text without moving the other letters/numbers/characters around.

Are you talking about the Insert key on a (more or less) standard keyboard?
In one mode, you can insert a letter or a word in a sentence, for example. Press the Insert key one time and suddenly, you will be typing over the words not "inserting" words (letters). Press the key again and you toggle to the mode.
