Unplug it from the crowded power strip and plug it into one that does not have any thing plug with it and it will work!
I had a similar problem that I just fixed. The drive was not being recognized at all - I unplugged, rebooted, switched to different computer, used different usb cable, plugged into wall outlet, NADA!
Then I tried something else - I just bought 2 more external hard drives and I switched the power port from the new one to the old one and the hard drive was recognized. I plugged the old outlet into the new hard drive and that worked, too. PHEW!
I had almost 100Gbs of music on there!
OMG. I spent about 3 hours, re-installing windows, downloading USB drivers, messing with registry entries, downloading microsoft hotfix's, and NOTHING.
Then I read this and though, oh please, that will never work. Well IT WORKS!
Unplug from the end of a lead and send it straight to the mains.
Thank you thank you. I was at the end of my rope. It worked
Holly crud!!! That really did work. I got the drive for my birthday, and I thought it was going to become my next door stop. But when plugging into the wall instead of my powerstrip, Bingo!! Works like a charm! Thanks,

Holy **** it worked! I was soooo worried that I would have to buy a new one and lose all of my files, but it worked!
That did not work
if you find anything that does, hit me up at: arrogantmodesty@tmail.com
Mine stopped working when I moved it to another location. When I read this, I thought about the power cord, I had misplaced it and used another one....so when I found the original power cord, plugged it in, and it worked. Don't know why it is so specific but I've heard the same thing goes with USB cords, too. Try using the original cords (or a better- -quality replacement if you HAVE to replace them.)
