I'd buy or build a Mini-ITX system. the mini-ITX boards run six volts and very low wattage. It can run off an internal M2 power supply directly off your battery. I'm running one in my car, right off the vehicles 12 volt power system. I'm using a 2.1Ghz processor with 1 Gig of RAM and 80 Gig laptop drive. By using a laptop drive, the computer runs completely off the 6 volt rail.
If you don't want to go with a laptop, Mini-ITX is probably the best way to go. You could try a Mac-mini if you want to go that route, it costs about the same and is about the same size. I preferred building my own though, cost me about $500 total with case and everything but display.
Use HP D530 power supply to run SSF desktop which can run on 12v dC current. Just by using one 6000VA in series
