The USB ports on the front panel allow convenience for devices which you might connect and disconnect from time to time (like portable media card readers for example, or USB-camera cables) so you don't have to reach to the back of your case. If you are going to use the front panel USB ports, make sure they are connected to the motherboard inside if you are not using a store-bought computer.
