The upper knife has two fixed positions: up and down. Pull the knob with the upper knife to the left and turn it down if it is in the up position.

The thresd is not catching needle thread

Try replacing the needle, and rethreading your machine. This will often solve this issue. If you have done so, it is likely that the timing of your machine is off. If this is the case, it is best to take your machine to a reputable sewing machine repair center for repair.

I want to learn how to thresd the sewing machine model 535FA? i don't have the manual for it.

First lift up the presser foot
Then turn the handwheel until the take-up lever is at it's highest
Thread:
From the spool
around the thread guide on the top rear
around the thread guide top front
down and around the tension, pulling up to fully engage the check spring in the tensioner
up and through the take-up lever
down through thread guides to the needle
thread the needle from front to back

The thresd gets knotted and it won't stitch

Rethread your machine
Make sure your cotton runs through the two tension plates
Check that your top tension is set on 5
Make sure your bobbin case is threaded correctly
Lastly, make sure there is no cotton stuck between your top tension's plates(take a long needle and remove any fluff)

The underside stitch is a mass of loose thresd

A mass of loose thread on the bottom of the fabric most likely indicates a total loss of upper tension. Remove the upper thread, raise the presser foot and rethread the machine. Make sure that the upper tension knob/dial is around 5. If you still have a problem, let me know what brand and model you have.

you need to push it in and turn toward you at the same time to bring it straight up and down
