I now know how to fix a stuck shutter. I was getting a whirring sound after the Nikon D100 took a sudden flurry of pictures upon depressing the shutter release. I only wanted to take one picture, but the camera malfunctioned. The shutter clicked multiple times, fast. Them, the camera started flashing "error" When I depressed the shutter release, all I got was a whirring sound and the shutter would not function. So, finally, I took off the lens, and while depressing the shutter release, I flipped up a small lever on the right side, inside the camera lens mount area, near the mirror. It must be the iris control or some mechanical lens connection. Anyway, the shutter made a click sound and the camera reacts normally. It happened again and I repeated this action and it fixed itself, again. Try it.
No, it's not an error. What this display indicates, is the availability of the total number of photos you want to take. If the display says, "r06", then you are in JPEG Mode. If it says "r03", then you are either 1) in RAW Mode, or 2) have your Noise Reduction on (see FAQ #2). As you take a few photos in succession, you will notice the indicator drops by how many photos you took.

If you have a "r03" display, then you need to go into your CSM Menu, and scroll down to CSM #4, and turn LONG EXP. NR to "OFF". When you are in Noise Reduction Mode, your D100 buffer is literally cut in half.

During shooting, or when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway, the number of images that can be stored in the memory buffer at current settings is shown on the exposure-count displays in the control panel and viewfinder. "r06" indicates that six images can fit in the camera's buffer, "r08" would indicate eight frames. Any other number could be displayed as well. Burst mode is used when you want to hold down the shutter button and continuously shoot. You are probably shooting in burst mode and your buffer is full, set the camera to single shot and see if that helps.

This is not an error, this is telling you how many more continuous shots you can take before the buffer fills up and you have to wait a while for it to empty.
Take a few quick shots and you will see it go down.
It means R(emaining) shots.
I used to worry about this.

You are right. I really appreciate your reply. The problem was that the AF-assist light stopped working. Nikon Tech Support walked me thru doing a camera reset. All is good now - thanks to you and Nikon.
I have had problems with my D100 shutter hanging. I get a "err" message. Now, when I press the shutter, I hear a whirring sound and the shutter seems stuck. I see a r06 message. I installed an empty Lexar 1 GB flash memory card, after deleting all the old files. The camera took a couple of pictures before going into this stuck mode. The battery is fully charged. The shutter was worked on by Nikon just over one year ago, but now it is acting very odd again, worse than before. Any suggestions?

yah i have the same problum with my d 100 its actually when i press the button and take a picture the error shows if i re on the cemera then it gone but after other taken picture it come again kindly suggest me what to do
