What operating system are you using? If it's Windows Vista, more than likely you have a portion of your hard drive partioned for a system restore. If this is the case, you should be able to reboot, pressing F11 when the computer comes back on. From this point, you can choose to restore the system or recover the factory settings. This will, of course, erase all the programs you have put on since you purchased the computer, and all the information you have saved will be gone. If you don't need to do this, you might consider restoring to an earlier time which will not effect your programs or saved info.
Hmmm..interesting question..compaq always makes this an unusual issue. I'd say you'd need the restore disk, yes. You might find them through this link, but you'll need to do some digging, methinks.
