I also had this problem. When starting the focus error alert came. Trying to move the focus button also triggered this. When I turned it off, the lens did not pull back.After being close to trowing it away, I used a little bit more force than before and turned the lens manually. I heard a click, and than it worked again. PS: Follow this tip on your own risk.....

I have exactly the same problem - "Focus Error" appears in screen on power up, and though I can take pictures, they are badly focussed. I can't find an answer to Vjollca's question.
My fujifilm Finepix suddenly stopped focusing. I get an autofocus error in red on the screen.
