Is replacing the power supply a job strictly for a professional or can I do it myself? Best place to purchase replacement unit. Do I need to get a HP replacement part, or can a place like best buy supply this?
Yes you can replaced the power supply but just make sure that unplug all power cord connected to ac power. When you removed the old power supply you must mark the connection with pencil so that when you install the new replacement power supply there is no mistake that cause you more trouble. Bring the old power supply when you buy because the size is important and also the wattages of power supply.
You should be able to replace the power supply. It is usually held in place by 4-6 screws. Unplug the cables on the motherboard and drives. Reconnect the new ones and away you go. A generic supply will be fine if it is of the correct physical size. Bring the old one with you when you go to get the new one.
