Root Folder/ Directory refers to the main Folder which contains all the important informations and commands your player has. It is similar to your Root Directory in your PC -- Drive C:/ where all the system files are located.

Root Directory includes sub folders such as your player's Master Boot Record (MBR - very crucial, this is the boot operating system), music file directory, audio record directory, data files directory such as organizer and phone directory (if your player has one).

Root Directory is very important for your player's performance as it contains all the valuable informations and commands so your player would run under normal condition. Once everything was erased in that root folder, you'll render your player useless. So be extra careful when you upgrade your player's firmware as this erases all files including those the OPERATING SYSTEM in the root folder.

It is safe however to format within your player as this erases only your data files and music. Just to be sure, avoid formating your player in your PC's MY COMPUTER/ WINDOWS EXPLORER unless it is specified in the users manual.

Luckily, MBR are usually erased when you entered your player's SERVICE MODE and you choose to erase the Firmware using some special keys. So, as long as you're using your player as mentioned in your users manual, you're okay with it. If you doesn't know all about mp3 player repairs or upgrades, leave the SERVICE MODE or PLAYER RECOVERY to the technicians.

Oh sorry, I didn't notice that you're asking about a DVD player. I havent got much infos and documentations about your player on the web, But akin to the universal meaning of ROOT DIRECTORY, it also applies to DVD players, as most players, may it be DVD players, mp3 players and some cameras have built in system/ boot files which are FIRMWARE UPGRADEABLE. Ask your local dealer or tech if your player's firmware is upgradeable or could be reset. If the answer is "yes", then be extra careful with this EPROM based players. Once all datas are erased, you're player is useless unless you connect to a computer and download the necessary firmware for it.
