There are limit switches at both ends of the rails for the scanner. It sounds like one of these switches has failed. The knocking is from the teeth on the drive gears slipping. The unit is not passing its self test. That is why you are getting the flashing red light. If the unit is new, it should be under warranty. Contact the place of purchase to get the steps you need to take to either get it repaired or exchanged. Search the web for a local Epson authorized service center.

I did not read the last part of your post, t is likely that your scanner lamp is overheating and musty be replaced. where is your location? so that I can find an epson service in your area.

Check also that the lock switch at the bottom or back of the scanner is not in lock position, or halfway between two positions.
