In you're case, find the hard disk drive manufacture name which is printed on a sticker on one side of the drive. Lets say you're hard disk drive is either a Seagate drive or a Maxtor drive. Download SeaTools for DOS from the link provided; http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?lo...
Once downloaded you'll be able to create a bootable CD or a bootable floppy disk which you'll be able to run their software in a Dos like mode. See the tutorial on the site. For Weatern Digital drives go here; http://support.wdc.com/product/download.... For Samsung drives go here use, (ES-Tool); http://www.samsung.com/us/business/compo...
Each program will test you're hard disk drive for problems and most of the time it can repair problems. All drive manufactures have software to test and setup both IDE and SATA drives. All allow you to check, setup, repair and format these drives. Keep in mind all of these will erase any and all data currently on the hard disk drive. Once completed you shouldn't have a problem installing an operating system. If the software finds a problem that can not be repaired and if the drive is still under warranty, themanufacture will replace you're drive.
Hope you fine this helpful!
