won't move anywhere on the screenhow do we know if we need to replace the mouse

Is it a wireless mouse? If so you may need to replace the batteries and re-sync it with the receiver unit. If it is a chorded USB mouse you may want to try a dif. usb port and see if that works. If it is a PS2 mouse you may need to replace it.

Usb - Flat square shape
PS2 - Small round shape.
