I stopped using my TI-86 for a few months and know the screen is completely blank like it has lost all functions. Is that something that can be fixed?
I hadn't used mine in years and had the same problem. Essentially you just need to give it a workout to get all the pixels working properly again and then it'll be just fine. I adjusted the contrast between full dark and nothing multiple times and turned the calculator on and off after each cycle and now it works like new.
I have not used my ti-86 for long time, when replaced the 4 AAA batteries it blinked and when off, I did that few times by removing and reinstalling the batteries. Then a message say fading in the center screen, "Mem cleared, Defaults set". What do I do?

Turn off transformers. Go to apps and go all the way down until you reach transformers then hit enter. Then a menu should appear and hit uninstall that should fix it.

The TI-86 uses a very small, very thin ribbon cable to connect the display board to the LCD. The cable is about 2.5 " wide and about 4" long, and is only slightly thicker than a piece of paper but has about 40+ leads buried inside. Over time the leads will break at the folds (there are at least two folds in this cable to fit it down inside the case). There is no cheap solution to fix this problem. You might have some "Mr. Fix-it" try to fix it, but he will tell you to throw it away after he renders it completely inoperable. The calculator uses two Torx bit screws at the bottom of the case (T-6 size) so you will have to get the correct screwdriver to open the case. Save your money, sanity and time and use it till you can't stand the missing lines and throw it out. Even the data cable looks like it is glued down so if it lifts off after being cooked or frozen a couple of dozen times in the back of your car you can't fix this.

Try adjusting the screen contrast. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible. Does that do anything?
