My computer has a 3com 10/100 NIC. It is detected by the computer. I am running windows XP. But I can not connect to the internet to set up a new account.It seems tat the otside modem that is attached is not detected.

Modems that are connected through ethernet cable requires no setup/installation/driver!
The only thing you need is to configure the actual connection to the internet. Please refer to your Intrenet Service Provider's website/support for more info, as there are various connection types, depending on your subscription and your specific ISP network type.

You should, in any case, get connected to the modem itself...
Do you get a message saying "network cable is disconnected and/or see an icon of 2 computers with a red X on top??:
* If yes, check the cables (if you haven't done so) and make sure the modem works properly (all necessary LEDs are on, etc.). Chage the cable if necessary or contact your ISP if your detect any problem with the modem.
* If not, only the connection setup is required!
