I had this problem for about six months on my Sony Vaio laptop (using Windows Vista). But I finally fixed it tonight (!) by following the steps on this webpage: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090528073907AAdN3jB. It's a problem with the touchpad driver, causing the touchpad to be too sensitive. When you type on your laptop, your hand occasionally brushes the touchpad, causing the cursor to jump to some random place in the text (or, alternatively, some text gets highlighted and is deleted as you type). After downloading the recommended Dell driver, and then restarting my computer as instructed, the problem was gone immediately. My only qualm was that my pointer speed was slower than before, but that was easily solved by opening the Control Panel, clicking Mouse Settings, clicking the Pointer Options tab, and moving the pointer speed to the maximum speed level. I also unchecked the "Enhance Pointer Precision" box thinking it might allow for freer pointer movement, but I really have no idea if that made any difference or not. Anyhow, the pointer speed is just a personal preference but has no bearing on the jumping cursor issue. Download the driver and restart the computer, and the problem goes away. Then adjust the speed if you want, or not.

Download the free 'Touchfreeze' program
It freezes the cursor while typing
The site also offers support - Issues tab
