Probable will not work on the Nikon's hot shoe because the contacts on the Sakar flash gun won't match the contacts on the Nikon's hot shoe. You can use the Sakar flash gun as a slave flash by connecting a optical flash trigger to the Sakar flash gun and use the Nikon's flash to trigger the Sakar slave flash.
It is not possible to use the Nikon SB-50DX directly on a Canon EOS Rebel camera. The Nikon flash gun hot shoe contacts do not match the Canon hot shoe contacts. You can use the Nikon as a slave flash gun with a PC flash cord that matches the Nikon's flash contacts then connect the end of this flash cord to a flash trigger. The Canon's flash can then trigger the Nikon flash gun via the flash trigger.
Many flashguns deigned for film cameras - even really expensive ones - will not work with DSLRs.
I have a perfectly good pentax gun that cost me almost £300. It is fanstastic on my TOTR Pentax SLR but will only blat at maximum power on my Pentax DSLR. I had to spend another almost £300 to buy the new gun that will work with all the bells and whistles on my DSLR.
It looks as though Canon work theirs the same way.

Try this:
Set to low power on flash, set flash to manual.
Remove flash from hotshoe.
Fire the flash by pushing the flash button for 3 mins, same problem(s)?
well Jack its all down to the capasitor inside the flash gun its most likley to be fully discharged by now and would need to be "reformed" or fully recharged, what you can try is turning the flash gun on and letting it build up to full power but dont flash it off, just let it stand on full power for an hour or so then fire it off and then do this again for a fuw times,if the capistor recharges fully it should work after that but NEVER look close into the flash gun when you fire it off it will BURN your eyes out! the flash is as hot as the sun when it fires off 6,000* C, and,thats hot! a fuw years ago there was a press guy who was taking photos inside the space shuttle with a flash gun that he fired a fuw times close to one of the windows,,,
and it ---CRACKED IT!!!!! NASA was not pleased!!!!
but they did changed all the windows in the space shuttle to some thing stronger

Have you checked to see if all the flash pins are making contact? Normally I only turn my flash on after I put it on the camera and then turn the camera off and then on again to see if everything is ok. I remember the flash would not communicate with the camera on a shoot and after a while I realized that the flash was not all the way in the hot shoe. Fool around with the flash off the camera first and see the flash have modes that you have to set up if the mode is set in full manual that might be a problem. There is a button that you have to hold down for three seconds to get in the menu. My buttons are fine and have not faded any at all. I realize that the power button an the flash is hard to press on, I do hope I was of help .GOOD LUCK
Using Vivitar 3200A flash gun on a DSLR is risky for the following reason. The trigger voltage of a DSLR at flash hot shoe that takes it to its TTL (through the lens) circuit is less than 10 volts, it is about 6 to 8 volts in the recent DSLRs. The trigger voltage generated by Vivitar 3200A at full charge flashing is around 180 volts (max). That is a fatal dose for a sensitive DSLR TTL circuit. This high voltage flash gun will work endlessly, the only damage is to the TTL flash circuit. When you attach a TTL flash to the DSLR after using Vivitar 3200A for sometime, your TTL flash will not communicate with your camera. It will be just another ordinary flash without any auto functions. There is a Wein adapter that you can fix b/w your cameral hot shoe and the vivitar flash gun that is said to reduce the trigger voltage that passes into the camera. Try it if you get it. Without this gadget it is better not to use non recommended and non TTL flashes on latest DSLRs.
