Just got this mahine from a computer teacher of mine, and we've been trying to fix it. It used to run fine but hasn't been used in a while. I tried to boot and got nothing at first, just power on. i'm getting a post test error for starters. 3 short beeps, pause, 3 short beeps, pause, 3 short beeps, then silence... attempted looking this up and only got results for a 3500, and its a RAM error there, between registered and unregistered DIMMs, but i checked and it's all registered 256mb ram (PC133) and its what it needs... this is not a novice solution, or i would be able to figure this out... It has done some strange things on occasion too... If more info is needed i will gladly post more, i just dont know if this server is too old for anyone to know much about it...
The IBM Netfinity 5600 is a complicated beast for sure. You really need to get a copy of the Netfinity Manual from IBM (not on the web site fyi.). It's as big as the machine unfortunately. In section 3, p.124 it lists 3-3-3 beep code as "No memory has been detected in the system" solution is "Reseat mem modules or install mem modules. If prob persists get machine serviced." On the previous page, 3 short beeps (only) on POST indicate "system mem error. combo only occurs when video bios cannot display error msg. replace the failing mem module." You might also want to check the light-path diagnostics inside the machine. A little light will be illuminated right beside the bad DIMM.
Oh yeah, you need to have registered ram with ECC. it is very picky. It's a server class machine so it needs the high end ram. non-reg, non-ecc retail ram will not work on this beastie.
Order of ram install is important. Put the biggest dimm in j1, then next biggest in j4, then j3, then j2. The web site has the errata on this as the manual actually has it backwards.
