The problem is that my nice Yamaha RXV 795 amplifier begins to haunt (Yes its Halloween but)

The symptoms are that is that when I play a CD another sound can faintly be heard in the background.
When I increase the volume it will not give ordinary effect and it turns itself off.
In fact, it sounds weak even though I do not play anything regardless of input selector and the effect buttom mode.
I have disconnected all input sources in addition to CD / DVD to rule out incorrect wiring.
What is the source of the problem and how can it be fixed?
