Simple solution (if I had paid attention). The linux loader (Ubuntu) uses more memory than I currently have loaded on the machine. I wasn't aware I was that underloaded memory-wise. Watch your loader. It will usually tell you what it needs in the way of RAM.

Sorry for the post. If I would have checked I would have realized my problem was simply too little memory on the system. Will upgrade and try again. Thanks anyway.
