I was able to install the program, Sierra Generations Family Tree Liberty Edition, but I am still not able to open the cd that contains all of the information that was typed in for my family tree. Please tell me if there is something that I can do to be able to open this cd. Thank you. Laurene Messina

SOURCE: I have 'generations' family tree

What version of Generations do you have? Which version of Vista (32- or 64-bit)? The 8.5A version should work with Vista: see http://www.twrcomputing.co.uk/store/Generations_on_Windows_7.html. There is a patch the the 8.5A, the direct link: http://www.twrcomputing.co.uk/update.exe . (No information is available on 64-bit OS compatibility so the above may apply to 32-bit Vista only.)

If you have an older version, you can try running in the compatibilty mode if you have Vista 32-bit. Right click on the installer (open the file explorer and manually navigate to the optical drive) and select Properties. Choose the compatibility tab and then check run as compatible and fill in an older version of Windows. Then right click on the installer and choose Run as Administrator. (This may work with Vista 64-bit but it isn't guaranteed since the OS requires signed drivers.) Repeat the compatibility tab step with the program's exe after installation if it doesn't get done automatically.

If the compatibility mode doesn't work, you either need to keep a second computer running an older version of Windows, a dual-boot machine or a virtual computer with an older version of Windows. Otherwise upgrade your software to Family Historian; this software will import the GEDCOM files from the last few versions of Generations. (Older versions saved the files in a different format. File conversion is available here: http://twrcomputing.co.uk/store/Data_Conversion.html)

I hope this helps.
